Thumbnails from Kintyre ND, June 2004
Here are a few photos I have thrown together from the Centennial Celebration for the post office in Kintyre ND. My great, great, great grand father established the
small town of Campbell ND in 1881 with his sons Hugh, Dugald and Alexander. The town was later renamed to Kintyre ND and is in Campbell county. The town now consists of
eight families - well down from its hey day before the Great Depression.
One of my cousins was retracing her roots a few years ago and kept in touch with the current owners of Alexander's homestead (Don and Jeanne Moch).
Last year, they asked if she would gather some of the clan to join in the centennial celebrations of the post office (which was unfortunately closed four years ago).
They expected about 1000 people and 35 floats for the parade; they were not to be disappointed.
Thanks to the wonders of email and Ailsa's unstinting efforts, 27 relatives of Alexander Campbell gathered for the festivities and were warmly welcomed.
Don and Jeanne laid on a Pitchfork cookout serving Dakota sized steaks (eat your heart out Texas) on Friday evening and the parade had over 100 entries with a vast crowd of supporters
by the time all was said and done.
On the Sunday, we were welcomed by the congregation of Glencoe Church which was built on land donated by Alexander. We were all invited to lunch with the congregation after the service
and shared many stories with them about the history of the town. It was then time for the family photo - Aisla decided to have a photo of each generation and I was firmly put in my place
when we realised that I am a member of the third generation of surviving relatives, joined by Connor, Colin, Grace (all aged under 5) and Glenn.
